The American Red Cross of Central Louisiana continues to move forward, making sure members of Central Louisiana are prepared for potential disasters this year by hosting emergency preparedness presentations and disaster operation training courses at their offices at 425 Bolton Avenue and by going out to various places in the community.
This week, about 11 members including Pastor Shelia Waddy of God’s Church located here in Alexandria completed the “Fulfilling Our Mission” and the Shelter Operations Training course to find out more about the Red Cross and to learn to become an effective shelter team. “We are a small church with a big heart,” said Pastor Waddy. “I am also a school teacher, and during the last major disaster I experienced firsthand, the emotional affect the disaster had on children. I want to make sure that I and my members are informed and properly trained to provide the best support possible, whether spiritual, emotional, or physically.”
The Red Cross also welcomed members of Chapter U with the Philanthropic Educational Organization (OEP) here in Alexandria for a Red Cross overview and building tour. “During the summer we take fill trips,” said Marjorie McBride, POE Vice President. “We were first interested in seeing what the Red Cross has done with the old Cotton Brothers building but we got an added bonus in hearing all of the great things the Red Cross does for this community.” PEO is a national and international organization of women who promote education and scholarships for women. The organization started in 1953 and has two chapters located here in Alexandria. Lucille Thompson, the current President of Chapter U was also in attendance and enjoyed the tour and presentation give by Red Cross Executive Director, Leann Murphy.
The mission of the American Red Cross is to help end human suffering by working to prevent, prepare for and to respond to emergencies. The volunteers and staff of the Red Cross do this every day, 24-hours a day with no regard to social or economic statues.
